Becoming just that little bit healthier – as individuals and local communities – could have such a positive impact on our NHS and our local economy, as well as society at large. Conversely, having poor health is not good news for anyone.
I will never lecture anyone about getting healthy. That approach has never worked on me and I will not go there! Instead, I hope to encourage people through support and facts.
Public Health is a collective endeavour: we will do it more easily if we work together. Sharing ideas and information can make a big difference. In Hampshire, we want to support people to take whatever steps they need to be healthy – whether that’s becoming more active, maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, or reducing alcohol consumption. And of course it’s not just about physical health but also about having good mental health too – the two go hand in hand. Mental health support is available whenever you need it – our website www.hants.gov.uk/mentalwellbeinghampshire is a great place to begin.
If you’re looking for an incentive for a healthier life, the facts speak for themselves. For example, did you know that giving up smoking lowers the risk of cancer and increases lung health immediately? Being physically active throughout the day helps you maintain a healthy weight and makes it easier to do daily tasks, such as climbing stairs and shopping, whilst also reducing the risk of heart disease.
But your first step doesn’t need to be a big one – a short walk can work wonders. Fresh air and nature are a great tonic and we are lucky to have access to some fabulous countryside here in Hampshire – check out the local walks detailed on Hampshire’s National Parks and Country Parks websites.
While we want to encourage people to help themselves wherever possible, it’s also very important that people also ask for support whenever it’s needed. So don’t hesitate to speak to your friends, family, local health professional or employer if you do need some advice on how to get healthy.
Speaking of employers, the Hampshire 2050 Partnership (which includes a broad range of organisations from the public, private and voluntary sector) has made this the Year of Health and Wellbeing. If you are an employer, please do consider what you might be able to do to support and encourage your workforce into a healthier lifestyle. Use our Year of Health and Wellbeing toolkit to start you off – just go to www.hants.gov.uk and search ‘partner toolkit’.
Finally, and importantly, please do take up any offers of screening or immunisation – whether it’s a flu or COVID jab, a free health check for those over the age of 40 or screenings for a range of diseases, including cancer. They are free – and could very well be life-saving.
